Gentrification In Brixton
Brixton is a district in South London. It was built up by the Black community which was part of the Windrush generation that arrived in London between 1948 - 1971. However in todays world many of the locals claim it to be unrecognisable to what they grew up in. This is due to gentrification. Gentrification is the process where a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in. However it can often displace the community and culture that was originally there, and this is what is seen happening in Brixton right now.

Many people in Brixton have recognised that the gentrification is erasing the culture and history of the Black community. There is a huge contrast between the Brixton that the Windrush generation built and the Brixton today that has been gentrified by white upper class people.

As well as this, the attraction for many people is the fact that Brixton's identity is Afro-Caribbean, and many people want to experience it. But when they visit, they realise that their expectations of this are almost opposite to what you experience now walking through Brixton. There are many more new pubs, bars, houses, and buildings that have taken away the black culture that was originally there. On top of this a lot of people can no longer afford to go to Brixton as the prices have increased in everything, and it will get to the point where people won't be able to afford to live there. This could force many of the original community to leave their home, almost totally erasing the Black community that originally built Brixton.
